STEMI
Pronunciation: STEM-ee
Also written as: STEMI — ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction
ST-elevation myocardial infarction, a type of AMI requiring emergency reperfusion therapy. Diabetic patients with STEMI face higher mortality and complication rates.
Full Definition
ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is a type of acute myocardial infarction characterized by complete coronary artery occlusion, resulting in characteristic ST-segment elevation on electrocardiography and requiring emergency reperfusion therapy. STEMI represents the most severe form of acute coronary syndrome and demands immediate intervention with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or fibrinolytic therapy. In patients with diabetes or other cardiometabolic conditions, STEMI carries significantly higher mortality rates, increased risk of cardiogenic shock, and higher likelihood of developing heart failure. These patients require aggressive post-infarction management including dual antiplatelet therapy, statins, and optimal glucose control.
Usage
Usage note: Always requires emergency intervention; distinguish clearly from NSTEMI.
