Antifibrinolytic agent used to reduce bleeding and transfusion requirements in cardiac surgery.

Full Definition

Tranexamic acid is a synthetic lysine analog that acts as an antifibrinolytic agent by competitively inhibiting plasminogen activation and plasmin activity. In cardiothoracic surgery, it significantly reduces perioperative bleeding, decreases transfusion requirements, and may reduce the incidence of stroke and seizures. The drug is particularly valuable in complex cardiac procedures where extensive bleeding is anticipated, such as redo operations, thoracic aortic surgery, or procedures requiring prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass. Recent studies have shown it to be superior to aprotinin in terms of safety profile while maintaining similar efficacy in reducing blood loss.
