eosinophilic myocarditis

Inflammatory cardiomyopathy characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the myocardium, often associated with hypereosinophilic syndrome.

Full Definition

Eosinophilic myocarditis is a rare form of inflammatory cardiomyopathy characterized by prominent eosinophilic infiltration of the myocardium. The condition can be associated with hypereosinophilic syndrome, drug hypersensitivity, parasitic infections, or malignancy. Pathologically, there is dense eosinophilic infiltrate with associated myocyte necrosis, fibrosis, and sometimes thrombus formation. The disease progresses through acute necrotic, thrombotic, and chronic fibrotic stages. Endomyocardial fibrosis may develop in chronic cases, leading to restrictive physiology. The condition can present as acute heart failure, chest pain, or arrhythmias, and diagnosis requires tissue confirmation of eosinophilic infiltration.

Usage

Usage note: Often associated with hypereosinophilic syndrome; requires tissue confirmation for diagnosis.
