floppy mitral valve syndrome

Mitral valve prolapse with myxomatous thickening and redundancy of valve leaflets, often leading to mitral regurgitation.

Full Definition

Floppy mitral valve syndrome, also known as mitral valve prolapse syndrome, is characterized by abnormal systolic displacement of mitral valve leaflets into the left atrium. The condition involves myxomatous degeneration with accumulation of glycosaminoglycans in the valve tissue, leading to leaflet thickening, elongation, and redundancy. Histologically, the valve shows disrupted collagen architecture and increased proteoglycan content. The syndrome can be primary (idiopathic) or secondary to connective tissue disorders such as Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from simple mitral valve prolapse, which may lack the myxomatous changes.
