Icosapent ethyl is a highly purified ethyl ester of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), an omega-3 fatty acid prescription medication. The REDUCE-IT trial demonstrated that icosapent ethyl significantly reduces major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with established cardiovascular disease or diabetes plus additional risk factors, despite controlled LDL cholesterol levels. It is indicated for patients with triglyceride levels ≥150 mg/dL who are on maximally tolerated statin therapy.
