Intravascular ultrasound imaging providing cross-sectional views of vessel walls during catheterization.

Full Definition

Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is a catheter-based imaging modality that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed cross-sectional images of blood vessel walls from inside the lumen. The technique provides superior visualization of plaque morphology, vessel dimensions, and stent deployment compared to conventional angiography. IVUS is particularly valuable for assessing ambiguous lesions, guiding interventional procedures, and evaluating treatment outcomes.

Usage note: Always capitalize as IVUS, not Ivus or ivus.
