STEMI

Pronunciation: STEH-mee

Also written as: STEMI — ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction

ST-elevation myocardial infarction requiring emergent reperfusion therapy.

Full Definition

ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is an acute coronary syndrome characterized by complete occlusion of a coronary artery resulting in transmural myocardial necrosis and characteristic electrocardiographic changes including ST-segment elevation in contiguous leads. STEMI represents a medical emergency requiring immediate reperfusion therapy, preferably primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) within 90 minutes of first medical contact, or fibrinolytic therapy if PCI is not readily available. Time-sensitive imaging and intervention protocols are critical for optimal patient outcomes.

Usage

Usage note: Always capitalize as STEMI; distinguish from NSTEMI in documentation.
