stent thrombosis

Thrombotic occlusion within a previously implanted coronary stent leading to acute vessel closure.

Full Definition

Stent thrombosis is a serious complication characterized by complete thrombotic occlusion within a previously implanted coronary stent, typically presenting as ST-elevation myocardial infarction due to abrupt vessel closure. The condition is classified temporally as acute (<24 hours), subacute (1-30 days), late (30 days to 1 year), or very late (>1 year) stent thrombosis. Risk factors include premature discontinuation of dual antiplatelet therapy, under-expansion or malapposition of stents, delayed endothelialization, and patient-specific factors such as diabetes or acute coronary syndrome. Academic Research Consortium (ARC) criteria define definite, probable, and possible stent thrombosis based on clinical presentation and angiographic findings.
