NT-proBNP is the N-terminal fragment of the prohormone brain natriuretic peptide, released by ventricular cardiomyocytes in response to increased wall tension and volume overload. This biomarker is widely used in cardiovascular research as both a diagnostic tool for heart failure and a prognostic indicator for cardiovascular outcomes. NT-proBNP levels correlate with disease severity and are commonly used as inclusion criteria, stratification variables, or secondary endpoints in heart failure trials. Unlike BNP, NT-proBNP has a longer half-life and is not affected by certain medications, making it a preferred biomarker in many research settings.
