NYHA class
Also written as: NYHA — New York Heart Association
New York Heart Association functional classification system (I-IV) for heart failure symptom severity based on activity limitation.
Full Definition
NYHA (New York Heart Association) functional classification is a subjective assessment tool that categorizes heart failure patients based on symptom severity and activity tolerance. Class I indicates no symptoms with ordinary activity, Class II shows mild symptoms with ordinary activity, Class III demonstrates marked limitation with less than ordinary activity, and Class IV represents symptoms at rest. In cardiovascular research, NYHA class serves as both an inclusion criterion and an outcome measure for heart failure studies. Editors should verify that baseline NYHA class distributions are reported and that improvements in functional class are appropriately analyzed as ordinal data.
Usage
Usage note: Use Roman numerals (I-IV) for classes. Capitalize 'Class' when referring to specific classifications.
