Full Definition

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an advanced intravascular imaging technique that uses near-infrared light to generate high-resolution cross-sectional images of coronary arteries. With axial resolution of 10-15 micrometers, OCT provides superior detail compared to intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) for assessing plaque characteristics, stent deployment, and vascular healing. In cardiovascular research, OCT serves as both a diagnostic tool and research endpoint, particularly in studies evaluating stent optimization, plaque vulnerability, and drug-eluting stent efficacy. The technique requires temporary blood displacement with contrast or saline flush during image acquisition.

Usage note: Always specify 'intravascular OCT' when context might confuse with ophthalmologic OCT.
