Full Definition
Encopresis is a functional elimination disorder involving repeated passage of feces in inappropriate places, such as clothing or the floor, by children who are chronologically or developmentally at least 4 years of age. The behavior may be involuntary or intentional and must occur at least once per month for at least three months. Two subtypes exist: constipation and overflow incontinence (more common) and without constipation and overflow incontinence. The condition often causes significant distress and impairment in social, academic, or other important areas of functioning. Treatment typically involves medical management of constipation combined with behavioral interventions.
