The pattern electroretinogram (PERG) is a specialized electrophysiological test that records retinal responses to pattern-reversal checkerboard or grating stimuli rather than full-field flashes. Unlike standard ERGs, the PERG primarily reflects the function of retinal ganglion cells and their axons. It consists of three main components: N35, P50, and N95, with the N95 component being particularly sensitive to ganglion cell dysfunction. PERG is especially valuable in evaluating optic nerve disorders, glaucoma, and macular diseases where standard ERG may be normal.
