A referential montage is an EEG display method where each active electrode is compared against a common reference electrode or combination of electrodes. Common references include linked ears, average reference, or a single electrode like Cz. This montage type facilitates localization of focal abnormalities by showing the voltage distribution across the scalp relative to the reference point. Unlike bipolar montages that show voltage differences between adjacent electrodes, referential montages display absolute voltages relative to the reference. The choice of reference significantly affects waveform appearance and interpretation, making reference selection crucial for accurate analysis.
