subclinical seizure

Epileptic discharge visible on EEG without observable clinical symptoms or behavioral changes.

Full Definition

A subclinical seizure is an epileptiform event that produces clear electrographic seizure patterns on EEG recording but lacks accompanying clinical signs or symptoms that would be apparent to observers or the patient. These events represent electrical seizures that do not reach the threshold for producing detectable behavioral manifestations. Subclinical seizures are particularly important in critically ill patients, neonates, and individuals under sedation, where they may contribute to neurological deterioration despite their silent presentation. Their detection requires continuous EEG monitoring and careful correlation with clinical status.

Usage

Usage note: Hyphenated form preferred; clinical significance depends on frequency and duration.
