Full Definition
Hepatic arterial embolization (HAE) is an interventional radiology procedure used to treat liver metastases from neuroendocrine tumors by occluding the hepatic arterial blood supply. Since liver metastases receive most of their blood supply from the hepatic artery while normal liver parenchyma is supplied by the portal vein, selective embolization can preferentially damage tumor tissue. The procedure may use bland embolization, chemoembolization (TACE), or radioembolization (TARE). HAE is particularly effective for bulky, symptomatic liver metastases and can provide both tumor control and symptom relief in patients with functional NETs.
Usage
Usage note: May be combined with chemotherapy (TACE) or radioactive microspheres (TARE).
