Hurthle cell carcinoma, also known as oxyphilic cell carcinoma, is a subtype of follicular thyroid cancer composed predominantly of Hurthle cells (oncocytes). These cells are characterized by abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm packed with mitochondria, giving them a distinctive microscopic appearance. This tumor type tends to be more aggressive than conventional follicular carcinoma, with higher rates of lymph node metastasis and reduced radioactive iodine uptake. The diagnosis requires histological confirmation and the tumor typically shows capsular or vascular invasion.
