RECIST criteria

Pronunciation: REE-sist

Also written as: RECIST — Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors

Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors used to assess treatment response in neuroendocrine tumor clinical trials.

Full Definition

RECIST criteria provide standardized guidelines for evaluating tumor response to therapy in solid tumors, including neuroendocrine tumors. The system defines complete response (CR), partial response (PR), stable disease (SD), and progressive disease (PD) based on changes in the sum of longest diameters of target lesions. In endocrine oncology, RECIST is particularly important for clinical trials of systemic therapies like targeted agents and chemotherapy. However, the slow-growing nature of many NETs means that stable disease may represent therapeutic benefit, making RECIST interpretation in this context different from rapidly proliferating tumors.

Usage

Usage note: Stable disease may represent therapeutic benefit in slow-growing NETs.

In Context

  • "The patient demonstrated stable disease by RECIST criteria after six months of treatment." — clinical trial report
  • "RECIST progression was noted despite biochemical stability of tumor markers." — oncology assessment
