Thyroid storm is a rare but potentially fatal endocrine emergency characterized by extreme hyperthyroidism with multisystem decompensation. Clinical features include severe hyperthermia, tachycardia, altered mental status, gastrointestinal symptoms, and cardiovascular collapse. The condition typically occurs in patients with untreated or inadequately treated hyperthyroidism who experience a precipitating factor such as infection, surgery, or iodine exposure. Diagnosis is clinical, as laboratory values may not differ significantly from uncomplicated thyrotoxicosis. Immediate treatment with antithyroid drugs, beta-blockers, corticosteroids, and supportive care is essential for survival.
