indeterminate cytology

Fine needle aspiration results that cannot definitively classify a thyroid nodule as benign or malignant.

Full Definition

Cytologic findings from thyroid fine needle aspiration that fall into Bethesda categories III (atypia of undetermined significance) or IV (follicular neoplasm). These results indicate cellular abnormalities that cannot be definitively classified as benign or malignant based on cytology alone. Indeterminate cytology often necessitates either repeat biopsy, molecular testing, or surgical excision for definitive diagnosis. The malignancy risk varies by specific category and institutional factors.

Usage

Usage note: Specify Bethesda category when known; distinguish from nondiagnostic specimens.
