CBCT
Pronunciation: see-bee-see-tee
Also written as: CBCT — Cone Beam Computed Tomography
Cone Beam Computed Tomography; a three-dimensional imaging modality used in endodontics to assess root canal anatomy, periapical pathology, and root fractures.
Full Definition
Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) provides volumetric three-dimensional images of the dentomaxillofacial structures at a lower radiation dose than conventional medical CT. In endodontics, it is used to identify additional root canals, evaluate the extent of periapical lesions, detect vertical root fractures, and plan surgical interventions such as apicoectomies. CBCT findings are documented in radiographic reports distinct from conventional periapical radiographs. Editors must expand the acronym on first use according to journal style and should not substitute 'CT scan' as a generic synonym, since the technology and interpretation differ materially from medical-grade CT.
Usage
Usage note: Expand on first mention; do not substitute 'CT scan,' which implies medical-grade helical CT and different dosimetry.
