PROM
Also written as: PROM — premature rupture of membranes
Premature rupture of membranes - rupture of amniotic sac before onset of labor.
Full Definition
Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) occurs when the amniotic sac ruptures before the onset of labor, regardless of gestational age. When PROM occurs before 37 weeks of gestation, it is termed preterm PROM (PPROM). The condition increases risks of infection (chorioamnionitis), cord prolapse, and preterm delivery. Management depends on gestational age, with consideration of expectant management versus delivery, antibiotic prophylaxis, and corticosteroids for fetal lung maturity in preterm cases.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from PPROM (preterm PROM) and SROM (spontaneous rupture of membranes in labor).
