Type I tumors involve only the common hepatic duct, Type II extends to the hepatic duct bifurcation, Type IIIa involves the bifurcation and right hepatic duct system, Type IIIb involves the bifurcation and left hepatic duct system, and Type IV involves both right and left hepatic duct systems. This classification system is crucial for surgical planning, as higher-grade lesions (Types III and IV) typically require more extensive hepatic resections and have lower rates of R0 resection.
