HFpEF

Also written as: HFpEF — Heart Failure with preserved Ejection Fraction

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, a common form of heart failure in elderly patients.

Full Definition

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a clinical syndrome characterized by signs and symptoms of heart failure with a left ventricular ejection fraction of 50% or greater. This condition is increasingly recognized as the predominant form of heart failure in geriatric patients, particularly women. HFpEF is often associated with comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and renal dysfunction. The pathophysiology involves diastolic dysfunction, increased ventricular stiffness, and impaired ventricular-arterial coupling.
