Abnormal thickening of the endometrial lining that may progress to malignancy if untreated.
Full Definition
Endometrial hyperplasia is characterized by excessive proliferation of endometrial glands and stroma, resulting in increased endometrial thickness. It is classified as either simple or complex based on architectural features, and with or without atypia based on cytological features. Complex atypical hyperplasia carries the highest risk of progression to endometrial adenocarcinoma. Risk factors include unopposed estrogen exposure, obesity, diabetes, and PCOS. Treatment options range from hormonal therapy to hysterectomy depending on the type and patient factors.
