Fibrous connective tissue layer in the palm that provides structural support and can become contracted in Dupuytren disease.

Full Definition

The palmar fascia, also known as the palmar aponeurosis, is a triangular sheet of dense fibrous connective tissue located beneath the skin of the palm. It originates from the palmaris longus tendon and the flexor retinaculum, extending distally to insert into the fingers through digital extensions and natatory ligaments. This structure provides structural integrity to the palm during gripping activities and protects underlying neurovascular structures. The palmar fascia is clinically significant as the primary tissue affected in Dupuytren disease, where pathological thickening and contraction lead to finger flexion contractures.
