monoclonal protein

An abnormal protein produced by a clone of plasma cells, detected in serum or urine electrophoresis.

Full Definition

A monoclonal protein, also called an M-protein or paraprotein, is an immunoglobulin or immunoglobulin fragment produced by a single clone of abnormal plasma cells. It appears as a distinct peak on serum protein electrophoresis and can indicate various conditions from benign monoclonal gammopathy to multiple myeloma. The presence, type, and quantity of monoclonal proteins are crucial for diagnosing and monitoring plasma cell disorders and certain lymphomas.
