MRD negativity
Pronunciation: M-R-D negativity
The absence of detectable disease below conventional morphologic thresholds, indicating deep remission.
Full Definition
MRD negativity refers to the absence of measurable residual disease below the detection limits of sensitive assays, typically defined as less than one malignant cell per 10,000 to 1,000,000 normal cells. This state indicates a deeper level of remission than conventional morphologic complete remission and is associated with improved progression-free and overall survival in various hematologic malignancies. Achievement of MRD negativity has become an important treatment endpoint and prognostic marker in multiple myeloma, acute leukemias, and some lymphomas.
Usage
Usage note: MRD should be written in capitals as it represents an acronym; specify the detection method used when relevant.
