Immunometric assays employ multiple antibodies in excess to capture and quantify specific hormones in biological samples. Unlike competitive immunoassays, immunometric assays use a 'sandwich' approach where the analyte is bound between capture and detection antibodies, allowing for greater specificity and wider dynamic ranges. This methodology is particularly important for measuring low-concentration hormones and peptide hormones. Clinical editors should understand that immunometric assays are less susceptible to matrix interference but may be affected by heterophile antibodies or high-dose hook effects in certain circumstances.
