Suppression Protocol

A suppression protocol is a dynamic function testing approach used in hormone evaluation where a pharmacological agent is administered to suppress the production or release of specific hormones, allowing assessment of normal feedback mechanisms and identification of autonomous hormone secretion. Common examples include dexamethasone suppression tests for cortisol evaluation, glucose loading for growth hormone suppression, and TRH stimulation followed by suppression studies. These protocols are essential for diagnosing conditions like Cushing's syndrome, acromegaly, and various pituitary disorders where basal hormone levels alone may not be diagnostic. Proper execution requires strict adherence to timing, dosing, and sampling schedules, as well as consideration of patient factors that might affect test validity such as medications, stress, and compliance.
