Transcrestal Sinus Augmentation

A minimally invasive technique for increasing subantral bone volume by accessing the sinus floor through the implant osteotomy rather than via a lateral window.

Full Definition

Transcrestal sinus augmentation, sometimes called the osteotome or crestal window sinus lift, involves fracturing or infracturing the sinus floor through the alveolar crest using osteotomes, hydraulic pressure, or balloon devices. Bone graft material is then introduced beneath the elevated Schneiderian membrane via the same crestal approach used for implant placement. This technique is indicated when residual subantral bone height is typically 5–8 mm and the required elevation is modest. Editors should distinguish this from the lateral window (Caldwell-Luc) sinus augmentation approach; both terms are occasionally conflated in manuscripts submitted by non-native English-speaking authors.

Usage note: Not to be confused with 'Crestal Approach Sinus Elevation' (already in database), which is a near-synonym; however, 'transcrestal sinus augmentation' is the preferred term in contemporary literature when describing the category broadly.
