transmucosal collar
The polished, gingival-penetrating portion of a tissue-level implant or healing abutment that traverses the soft tissue and defines the mucosal seal.
Full Definition
The transmucosal collar is the smooth, machined section of a tissue-level dental implant or a separately attached healing component that passes through the oral mucosa and is exposed in the mouth. Its height and contour influence the soft-tissue emergence profile and the quality of the peri-implant mucosal seal. Editors will encounter this term in surgical and prosthetic protocols, as well as in implant manufacturer specifications. The collar height is a clinically important measurement that should be recorded accurately in documentation. It must not be confused with the 'abutment collar', which is a component of the prosthetic abutment rather than the implant body itself.
Usage
Usage note: Hyphenate 'transmucosal' as a modifier (transmucosal collar). Do not abbreviate.
