Vertical Bone Augmentation

A surgical procedure to increase alveolar bone height in cases of severe ridge atrophy where insufficient vertical bone prevents safe or prosthetically acceptable implant placement.

Vertical bone augmentation is considered one of the most technically demanding procedures in implant dentistry due to the limited blood supply at the ridge crest and the high compressive forces exerted by overlying soft tissue that collapse regenerative space. Techniques include vertical guided bone regeneration with rigid titanium-reinforced membranes, distraction osteogenesis, and onlay block bone grafting. Adequate vertical bone gain is essential to achieve the correct implant depth for aesthetic emergence profile and crown-to-implant ratio. Editors should note that studies on vertical augmentation carry higher complication rates and require careful distinction in systematic reviews from the more predictable horizontal augmentation literature.
