The contraction stress test (CST) is an antepartum surveillance method used to evaluate fetal well-being by monitoring fetal heart rate patterns during uterine contractions. The test assesses placental reserve and the fetus's ability to tolerate the stress of labor contractions. Contractions can be induced through nipple stimulation or oxytocin administration. A negative CST (no late decelerations) suggests adequate placental function, while a positive CST (persistent late decelerations) may indicate placental insufficiency and requires further evaluation or delivery consideration.

Usage note: Abbreviate as CST in clinical documentation after first use. Do not confuse with cardiac stress testing.
