SNAP-II, or Score for Neonatal Acute Physiology II, is a validated illness severity scoring system specifically designed for newborns in intensive care units. This simplified version of the original SNAP score uses six physiologic variables measured within the first 12 hours of NICU admission: mean blood pressure, lowest temperature, PO2/FiO2 ratio, lowest serum pH, presence of seizures, and urine output. Each variable is assigned points based on deviation from normal values, and the total score correlates with mortality risk. SNAP-II scores are commonly used in neonatal research to stratify patient populations by illness severity, compare outcomes across institutions, and adjust for case mix when evaluating quality metrics. The score ranges from 0 to over 100, with higher scores indicating greater illness severity.
