Synchronous intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV) is a mechanical ventilation strategy commonly used in neonatal intensive care that combines mandatory machine-delivered breaths with the infant's own spontaneous breathing. The ventilator synchronizes its mandatory breaths with the patient's respiratory efforts, reducing the work of breathing and improving patient comfort. This mode allows for gradual weaning from mechanical ventilation as the infant's respiratory function improves. SIMV is particularly beneficial for preterm infants who may have weak respiratory muscles but retain some spontaneous breathing capability.
