Cerebral salt-wasting syndrome is a disorder characterized by excessive renal sodium excretion, leading to hyponatremia and volume depletion in patients with central nervous system pathology. Unlike syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), cerebral salt-wasting involves true volume depletion and requires different treatment approaches. This condition commonly occurs after craniotomy for brain tumor resection and requires careful fluid and electrolyte management. Accurate diagnosis is crucial as inappropriate treatment can worsen patient outcomes.
