Cytotoxic Edema

Intracellular brain swelling caused by cellular energy failure, often seen with acute tumor-related ischemia or treatment toxicity.

Full Definition

Cytotoxic edema represents intracellular water accumulation resulting from failure of cellular energy-dependent ion pumps, commonly occurring in neuro-oncology when tumors compress blood vessels or when treatments cause cellular toxicity. Unlike vasogenic edema which involves extracellular fluid accumulation, cytotoxic edema appears as restricted diffusion on magnetic resonance imaging. This distinction is crucial for editors as the two types require different therapeutic approaches and have different prognostic implications in brain tumor patients.
