Neuraxis seeding refers to the dissemination of malignant cells through cerebrospinal fluid pathways, resulting in tumor deposits at distant sites within the central nervous system. This phenomenon is particularly common in medulloepitheliomas, ependymomas, and other embryonal tumors that have propensity for CSF spread. The process involves tumor cells becoming detached from the primary mass and traveling through cerebrospinal fluid to implant in remote locations along the neuraxis, including the spine. Detection requires careful imaging of the entire neuraxis and cerebrospinal fluid cytological examination. In staging and treatment planning, the presence of neuraxis seeding significantly alters prognosis and necessitates craniospinal radiation therapy.
