Vasogenic edema represents brain tissue swelling caused by increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier, allowing fluid and proteins to leak into the extracellular space. This type of edema is particularly common around brain tumors, where disruption of normal vascular integrity leads to characteristic T2-hyperintense changes extending into surrounding white matter. On imaging, vasogenic edema typically follows white matter tracts and creates finger-like projections radiating from the tumor. Unlike cytotoxic edema, vasogenic edema responds to corticosteroid treatment, making this distinction clinically important. In neuro-oncology, the extent of vasogenic edema may influence symptoms, treatment planning, and assessment of treatment response. Editors should distinguish this from other forms of brain swelling.
