oligodendroglioma
Pronunciation: oh-li-go-den-dro-glee-OH-ma
A brain tumor arising from oligodendrocytes, characterized by 'fried egg' cellular appearance and calcifications.
Full Definition
A type of glioma that develops from oligodendrocytes, the cells responsible for producing myelin in the central nervous system. Histologically characterized by uniform cells with round nuclei surrounded by clear cytoplasm, creating a distinctive 'fried egg' appearance. These tumors often contain calcifications and have a characteristic 'chicken wire' vascular pattern. Molecular markers, particularly IDH mutation and 1p/19q codeletion, are now essential for diagnosis. Oligodendrogliomas generally have a better prognosis than astrocytomas and are more responsive to chemotherapy.
Usage
Usage note: Molecular testing results should be included when discussing diagnosis; note the characteristic microscopic appearance.
