Neurosecretory granule biogenesis encompasses the complex series of cellular events involved in the formation, packaging, and maturation of secretory vesicles in neuroendocrine cells. The process begins at the trans-Golgi network where prohormones are sorted and packaged into immature secretory granules. These vesicles then undergo maturation involving acidification, prohormone processing by specific convertases, and removal of excess membrane and content. The mature granules are stored until appropriate stimuli trigger their regulated exocytosis. Defects in this process can lead to neuroendocrine disorders and altered hormone secretion patterns.
