perineuronal satellite oligodendrocyte

Oligodendrocytes positioned immediately adjacent to neuronal cell bodies, distinct from those forming myelin sheaths around axons.

Full Definition

Perineuronal satellite oligodendrocytes are a specialized population of oligodendroglial cells that maintain close spatial relationships with neuronal soma, particularly in gray matter regions. Unlike their white matter counterparts that primarily function in myelination, these cells are thought to provide metabolic support and maintain the microenvironment around neuronal cell bodies. They can be distinguished morphologically by their small, dense nuclei and minimal cytoplasm, and are typically arranged in clusters around large neurons. In pathological conditions, these cells may show reactive changes including increased numbers (oligodendroglial satellitosis) or degenerative features. Their increase is often observed in various neurodegenerative conditions and may represent either a reactive response or primary pathological involvement. Immunohistochemically, they express typical oligodendroglial markers such as Olig2 and SOX10 but may show different expression patterns compared to interfascicular oligodendrocytes.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish carefully from other perineuronal satellite cells; specify location and staining characteristics in reports.
