Perivascular lymphocytic cuffing refers to the accumulation of inflammatory cells, predominantly lymphocytes, around blood vessels within the central nervous system. This pattern is characteristic of various neuroinflammatory conditions including viral encephalitis, multiple sclerosis, and autoimmune encephalitides. The lymphocytic infiltrate typically extends from the perivascular space into the adjacent neuropil, creating a characteristic 'cuffing' appearance on histological examination. The severity and distribution of cuffing can provide diagnostic clues about the underlying pathological process.
