subpial gliosis

Reactive astrocytic proliferation immediately beneath the pial surface of the brain, often indicating cortical injury.

Full Definition

Subpial gliosis refers to the accumulation of reactive astrocytes in the superficial cortical layers immediately below the pia mater. This pattern of astrocytic reaction typically occurs in response to cortical injury, hypoxic-ischemic damage, or chronic inflammatory conditions. The gliotic tissue forms a distinct band of increased cellularity that can be identified in routine histological sections and confirmed with GFAP immunostaining. Subpial gliosis is commonly observed in conditions such as cortical infarcts, epilepsy-related cortical dysplasia, and certain inflammatory brain diseases.
