Bishop score
A standardised scoring system used to assess cervical ripeness and predict success of labour induction.
Full Definition
The Bishop score evaluates five components of the cervix and foetal station: cervical dilation, effacement, consistency, position, and foetal station. Each parameter is scored 0-3 points, with a maximum total of 13. Scores of 8 or higher indicate favourable conditions for induction, while lower scores may require cervical ripening agents. This scoring system helps clinicians make informed decisions about timing and method of labour induction.
