Full Definition

Chorion villus sampling (CVS) is an invasive prenatal diagnostic procedure performed between 10-13 weeks of pregnancy to detect chromosomal abnormalities and genetic disorders. The test involves obtaining a small sample of chorionic villi from the placenta, either through the cervix (transcervical) or through the abdomen (transabdominal). CVS provides earlier diagnosis than amniocentesis but carries a small risk of miscarriage (approximately 1 in 300-500). The procedure is typically offered to women at increased risk of genetic conditions based on maternal age, family history, or abnormal screening results.
