colposcopy
Pronunciation: kol-POS-koh-pee
Examination of the cervix, vagina, and vulva using a specialized magnifying instrument called a colposcope.
Full Definition
A diagnostic procedure that uses a colposcope (a specialized microscope with light) to provide magnified visualization of the cervix, vagina, and vulva. Colposcopy is typically performed following abnormal Pap smear results or positive HPV testing to identify areas of abnormal tissue that may require biopsy. During the procedure, acetic acid solution may be applied to highlight abnormal cells, and directed biopsies can be taken from suspicious areas. The examination helps distinguish between benign and potentially precancerous or cancerous lesions, guiding further management decisions.
Usage
Usage note: Not to be confused with colonoscopy (colon examination) or cystoscopy (bladder examination).
