IUGR

Also written as: IUGR — Intrauterine Growth Restriction

Intrauterine growth restriction; condition where fetal growth is significantly below expected parameters.

Full Definition

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a condition in which the fetus fails to achieve its genetically determined growth potential in utero. It is typically defined as an estimated fetal weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age, though some definitions use the 3rd or 5th percentile. IUGR can be caused by maternal factors (hypertension, malnutrition), placental factors (placental insufficiency), or fetal factors (genetic abnormalities, infections). The condition increases risks of perinatal morbidity and mortality and may require early delivery or intensive monitoring.

Usage

Usage note: Increasingly replaced by 'FGR' (fetal growth restriction) in modern usage to avoid negative connotations.

In Context

  • "Serial ultrasounds confirmed IUGR with estimated fetal weight below the 5th percentile." — maternal-fetal medicine consultation
