Choroidal excavation refers to an abnormal depression or excavation in the choroidal layer that can be either congenital or acquired. In ocular oncology contexts, acquired choroidal excavations may develop secondary to tumor resolution following treatment, choroidal atrophy, or inflammatory processes. These excavations are typically detected on optical coherence tomography (OCT) as focal areas where the normal choroidal contour is interrupted by an inward depression. The overlying retinal pigment epithelium may show corresponding changes including hyperplasia, atrophy, or detachment. While often asymptomatic, larger excavations may be associated with visual field defects or metamorphopsia, particularly when involving the macular region.
